Founded by Joanna
Thomas in 2001. Girls
Run Too was born out of her
frustration of not being able to find good, stylish running wear.
Jo started running in order to lose weight. Discovering that both
the physical and mental benefits suited her she continues to run
and now really enjoys the cross training elements of triathlon. Her
gravel phobia has kept her cycling in the gym but her children and
Heather (Bike Freak - Team GRT) have big plans to change
that.
Jo's
Story
Pregnancy had not been kind to me but the resulting angels are fantastic! The daily family pack of Mars bars that I felt was necessary to fuel breast-feeding, probably contributed more to my weight gain than either of my babies. Although I was big, pregnancy must have shrunk my brain for in May 1999 I heard myself promise to run the brute of a local road race. I had just watched friends complete this race in various states of health, but all glowing with achievement, and caught up in their excitement I found myself agreeing to run next year.
Training would start
January 2000. Great, I thought, 7 months to sneak in a bit of
fitness work before the New Year. Christmas came and went and I was
no fitter and most definitely heavier. The year 2000 was here and
luckily three friends and a training program turned out to be more
reliable than the millennium bug. Determined that my running
experience would be as short lived as my step and aerobic efforts,
I made the only essential purchases that you need to run, a good
pair of running shoes and a supportive bra.
So
on that very cold first night as I stepped out in my new trainers
and bra, my now redundant maternity leggings and several
sweatshirts was I glad it was dark. The planned route was just
under one mile; we would walk a bit, run a bit, walk a bit and
perhaps run a bit more. I was walking well when asked if I was
ready to run, and as everyone else seemed keen I went along with
it. We ran (slowly, not much faster than a walk), then walked and
ran, walked and ran and we soon completed the planned route down to
car number two (that's another story!)
The whole experience
was very bizarre. What I had dreaded for seven months had lasted
less than 20 minutes, it had not hurt and I went home looking forward to
our next run.
Ten months later I
ran my first half marathon.
At
Girls Run Too we are active for fun and believe that good quality
sportswear should be available to every woman that wants it
regardless of her ability, shape or size and in all of the latest
colours if that is what she desires.
